I often paint small canvases as gifts, but since I don't usually provide frames the sides of the canvas are usually just painted white or black to cover wayward paint. Lately I've been adding gold metallic foil to the sides, and I'm really happy with the results. Please note that his process can get messy.
Supplies
- any canvas
- metallic gold foil (from the dollar store)
- mod podge
Tools:
- paint brush
1) I usually paint the sides of the canvas black - this gives more contrast with foil
3) Apply mod podge to one side of the canvas, and gently place the foil overtop the wet mod podge
4) Continue until all 4 sides are covered in foil. Don't worry about overlapping pieces at this stage.
5) Gently press down all of the foil (don't rub) if you missed some spots, just reapply more mod podge and foil where needed. Set aside to dry.
6) After about 2 hours you mod podge will be dry. Now for the messy part: take a dry paintbrush and start "sweeping" away the additional foil with back and forth strokes.
Once all the loose foil is removed you are essentially done. If you find the foil still coves off in your hands, you can add a layer of mod podge over the foil, the only drawback will be that the foil will have a patina, so will be more copper in colour and less reflective (see the bottom canvas in the image below for reference).
