Create from Felt the Provincial Flower of Nova Scotia: Mayflower

Nova Scotia has the oldest designated provincial flower in Canada - the Mayflower. Named after the ship that brought people from Europe to Massachusetts, by the late 18th century a lot of Loyalists had resettled in the eastern part of Canada, making the Mayflower a fitting choice for a provincial emblem.

Supplies

  • white of light pink felt; green felt
  • wire (8mm)
  • floral tape
  • yellow embroidery floss
  • optional: pink blush (works best with white felt)
  • glue gun glue sticks

Tools

  • wire cutter
  • scissors
  • glue gun

1) Cut out felt pieces and a 15cm piece of wire.

2) To make the bud, bend down one end (around 3- 5 mm) of the wire, add some glue to the center of the white (or pink) felt circle, place the bent end of the wire in to the center glue and wrap the sides of the felt down (glue as needed).

3) Using a dap of glue, attach a petal base to the bottom base of the folded down felt circle, and with another dab of glue to the top of said petal, and attach it to the center of the felt circle. Repeat this 2 more time, spacing the petals evenly apart.

4) Roll a green felt sepal piece around the base of the bud petals a glue in place, as needed.

5) Wrap half of  the wire base with a strip of green felt. Attach with glue as needed

7) Prepare to make the blooms, but cutting a 30 cm piece of wire. Wrap yellow embroidery floss around your fingers around 10 times and remove from your hand, with the loops still intact. Fold down one end of the wire, around 5 cm, and place the center of the the embroidery floss loops, where the wire bends. Twist the wire to secure the floss, use floral tape to secure it even more.

8) For each flower petal, cut a 10 cm piece of wire, bend down one end (around 1- 2 cm). Place the bent down part of the wire overtop a petal front piece. Use the glue gun to apply glue to the back of the petal felt piece and place over top the petal front, sandwiching the wire between the felt pieces.

9) Attach 5 petals around the stamin by wrapping/ twisting the petal wires together. Petal fronts should be inward, against the stamin floss.

10) Roll a green felt sepal piece around the base of the flower a glue in place, as needed.

11) Again, wrap half of  the wire base with a strip of green felt. Attach with glue as needed.

12) Once the flowers are done, set them aside to make the leaves. Take a green felt leaf piece and cut it in half. Place a piece of wire, around 10 15 cm in length, and place it near the center cut line on one side of the leaf. Apply glue to the other side of the leaf along the center cut line and place over top the wire, overlapping the felt along the center part. Clean up with scissors as needed.

13) Wrap half of the wire stem with a strip of green felt

14) Gather all of  the finished leaves, flowers and buds, twist the exposed wires together, trim the wire as desired and warp all remaining exposed with with strips of green felt, using glue to secure the felt as needed.

15) bend petals and leaves in to your desired shape. Apply pink blush to the edges of the flower petals.

DIY Fly Swatter

This is my second fly swatter I have created - they really do work! These are based loosely on the cute fly shaped fly swatters from Ameico Inc . DIY Bumble Bee Finger Puppet

Let me show you how I make a simple, but realistic looking bumble bee finger puppet! Place floss legs and antenna as desired. place the little triangle felt pieces over the legs and the oval felt piece over the head area  6) once the felt pieces and floss are sandwiched together, fold over the wax paper and place under a weighted book. DIY Mushroom Candles

I love the mushroom candles on the market, but I find them expensive. I had some straight pillar candles from the dollar store which I carved into small, birthday sized candles. I carved 2-3 small mushroom candles from each regular candle. Each candle took around 15 minuets to carve. Before I get into how I carved them, I have 2 notes of caution: this will get messy, have some newspaper handy to work on top of SAFETY FIRST: this is an adult craft, use caution with blades Supplies: straight taper candle wax in desired colours (old birthday candles, natural beeswax) acrylic paint (optional) Tools: a VERY DULL BLADE (I used an old army knife a bought from the dollar store years ago) heat proof container (I used an old votive candle holder) pot of hot water to melt wax in popsicle sticks 1) with your blade, mark out a line (going all the way around the candle) the total approximate size you want your mushroom candle to be 2) snap the candle so it breaks along the line you made, slice...
