Create from Felt the Provincial Flower of Alberta: Wild Rose

The prickly rose was designated as the provincial emblem of Alberta in 1930. Known for it's amazing smell and bright pink petals, this hardy bush thrives on the prairies. Based on it's resilience and beauty, indigenous communities used it as a symbol of love in their art.

Supplies:
  • wire
  • pink, green and yellow felt
  • glue gun glue

Tools
  • scissors
  • pinking shears (optional)
  • wire cutter
  • pilers
  • glue gun

1) Cut out the pieces of felt out. Cut the wire: one 15 cm piece and two 10 cm pieces.

2) take the green felt leaf circles and trim the edge with pinking shears. Cut the pieces in half.

3) take one of the 10cm pieces of wire and place it near the straight edge of the middle cut. Apply glue gun glue to the opposite side near the straight edge. Sandwich the wire between the two felt pieces by placing the glued edge so the pieces overlap in the center.

3) Take a strip of cut cut felt, apply a small amount of glue to one end and secure it to the base of the leaf. Wrap the wire by twisting the felt strip around, and secure near the base of the wire.

4) For the stigma, take you yellow circle piece, apply a dab of glue in the center, and place one end of the 15cm wire into the glue. Using your fingers, push the sides of the circle down the side of the wire.

5) To make the stamin, take the 12 x 3cm piece of yellow felt, folding it in half  height wise (so it would be 12 x 1.5 cm). With scissors, cut 1 cm slits along the folded edge every .5cm or so. Apply glue along the edge of one side of the length of the piece and press the edges together.

6) To add the stamin, apply some glue to the edge of one end of the stamin piece (the edge at the base, not the loops) and attach to the base of the stigma. Roll the stamin loops around the stigma piece as many tames as you like, securing with glue at the base every 1 cm or so.

7) Add the petals by securing the small end of the petals to the base of the yellow stamin.

8) Add leaves to stem by twisting the wires together. Apply some glue to one end of a green felt strip, and attach it to the base of the flower. Proceed wrapping the felt strip around the wire stem, all the way to the base of the wire, covering the area where the wires for the leaves are twisted together, along the way

DIY Mushroom Candles

I love the mushroom candles on the market, but I find them expensive. I had some straight pillar candles from the dollar store which I carved into small, birthday sized candles. I carved 2-3 small mushroom candles from each regular candle. Each candle took around 15 minuets to carve. Before I get into how I carved them, I have 2 notes of caution: this will get messy, have some newspaper handy to work on top of SAFETY FIRST: this is an adult craft, use caution with blades Supplies: straight taper candle wax in desired colours (old birthday candles, natural beeswax) acrylic paint (optional) Tools: a VERY DULL BLADE (I used an old army knife a bought from the dollar store years ago) heat proof container (I used an old votive candle holder) pot of hot water to melt wax in popsicle sticks 1) with your blade, mark out a line (going all the way around the candle) the total approximate size you want your mushroom candle to be 2) snap the candle so it breaks along the line you made, slice...
