Every year my sister attends the Calgary Stampede, and every year I have had a project I was stuck on so I was unable to attend. This year I made a little bag in hopes that I will get to attend this year. Here is how I made it:
First I read over this tutorial about making a painted canvas clutch that The House that Lars Built
Supplies:
- thin cotton
- paint in choice of colours - i used blue, brown white and black
- suede leather lacing
- eyelet kit (8mm)
- upholstery thread
- zipper
- needle and thimble (the painted cotton is still pretty thick so be careful not to hurt yourself)
- a thin fabric for lining the interior, cut to the same size as your cotton
- clips (paper clips, cloths pins etc)
If you are not using a sewing machine, use the following to help you sew a straight line:
- ruler/pencil/painter's tape
Instructions:
1) draw out your image on the cotton and paint with flats:

3) once the paint is dry, take your interior fabric and place it right side up, take your painted cotton and place it right side down. Be sure there are no wrinkles in the fabrics and clip in to place.
4) if sewing by hand, use a ruler and mark out straight lines as a guide to where you want to sew - be sure to leave an opening large enough to flip these fabrics inside out (say 10cm).
6) once the fabrics have been turned right side out, flatten as best you can with your fingers. Fold in half.
7) open the zipper and line it up to the top of the purse. Clip the zipper in place on both sides. Using a ruler and painter's tape mark out where your stiches will go to sew the zipper in - about 1/2cm from the top of the painted canvas on each side
8) add the eyelets

9) using a ruler and painter's tape mark out 1/2cm seam on each of the sides of the purse and do a running stitch down each side
